A 2022 bronze casting project depicting the adult version of our favorite baking mascot, the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Done for a casting class which took us from various types of mold making to pouring and finishing.
Initial concept built onto .25" steel bar armature in oil based clay.
Arms removed to be casted as separate parts. First layer of urethane rubber applied to maintain detail of surface in mold. Subsequent layers thickened with a poly-fiber filling for added structure.
After 3 additional layers of reinforced rubber were applied, a plaster mother mold is added to main body. Arms molded in base rubber and split down their long center.
Initial removal of mold.
Result of wax pour with arms and sprues welded on.
Pouring done with 50lb crucible for entire class of sculptures.
Initial casting before cleanup.
Result after holes welded and irregularities to surface removed. First coating of liver of sulfur patina applied.
