Iterative Texture Animation
An experimental animation meant to build up texture with successive passes in different media.

This project began as a much longer animation involving a man attacking a body of water. This being my first foray into both animation with an armature and - in a sense - rotoscoping, I scaled back to an animated snippet of the character's face on account of time constraints

Initial cutaway of a face looking to and away from camera. The face is modeled out of plasticine clay onto a laser-cut structure

I projected the initial animation onto a pad of newsprint paper and traced each frame in charcoal twice, doubling the frame rate

After taking pictures of each charcoal drawing, I uploaded them to illustrator and cleaned them up so they could be engraved onto veneered wood slats with a laser cutter.

Each 4x4 inch slat was individually processed to reintroduce contrast. This was done using a wood burner and blow torch to add back in char, as well as a knife and awl to scrape away material and expose the lighter surface underneath.
